- In 2006, Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank jointly received the Nobel Prize for creating the concept of micro-credit (very small loans) which make it possible for the poorest of the poor in Bangladesh to obtain loans and become successful entrepeneurs. Grameen Bank "reversed conventional banking practice ... and created a banking system based on mutual trust, accountability, participation and creativity."
- Through her book Silent Spring (1962), biologist and nature writer Rachel Carson alerted the public and the government to the dangers of pesticides and catalyzed the environmental movement.
